Helen Schafer Garcia and Lynn Leahy

A Field Guide to the Fantastical

The World around you from your Imagination

Join Lynn Leahy and Helen Shafer Garcia for an extraordinary week in southern France.  Our workshop will follow themes historically ingrained in this region while we reside in the medieval village of Durfort.

Our adventure will begin at La Cascade, a beautifully restored home and art retreat on the river Sor. Imagine starting each day to the relaxing sound of a waterfall , a sumptuous meal, and the anticipation of beginning your creative journey.

Our four day progressive workshop will combine the techniques of reverse glass painting, drawing and watercolor painting, and book construction.

Lynn will walk you through the steps of reverse glass painted tiles. Lynn has perfected this traditional Eastern European technique of painting on one side of the glass knowing that it will be viewed on the opposite side. This technique involves water based paints and clear glass tiles. Our imagery will be flowers, fairies, and other wondrous things. These veritable tiles will be used to enhance the cover of the journal structure. The book covers will include leather attachments with hand sewn details.

Helen will guide you on a creative journey of drawing and watercolor techniques used to fill your Fantastical Journal. Paint and draw expressively and find your creative voice with watercolor fusion and contour drawing. Our pages will show beautiful flowers, pods, and other natural driven shapes with a creature or two. Once finished, this imaginary   inspired book will house old maps and postcards relating to our imagery that we’ll collect on our field trips to the local towns.

These contemporary mixed media techniques will add a new dimension to any mixed media project.

Mener La Belle Vie at La Cascade - Art & Senses Retreat in the South of France

We’ll be living the good life for a delightful week in the South of France. A full immersion art & senses retreat where we'll treasure hunt for vintage materials, beautiful ephemera and unique objects at the mache aux puces and vide greniers (flea markets and community sales) that we'll re-purpose and transform into art.

For our creative time, we'll build a gorgeous handmade journal de trésors, incorporating vintage handwritten letters, ephemera and imagery discovered on our excursion to Montolieu, known as the book village, and found in abundance at the local vide greniers. After we've included the best of the best of our collected and curated treasures into our journals, we'll also make petite 6x6 inch collages with our precious en français scraps so nothing goes to waste! These scraps will get tossed into a big community pile to create a second round of fresh inspiration and collage fodder, so no need to covet thy neighbor's good junk. And for those three dimensional treasures (small advertising tins, petite brass hands, tiny dolls parts, little skeleton keys, old medals, broken bits of jewelry, cameos and LOTS more to be discovered) we can’t help but purchase, you know we must turn them into some fun, funky and uniquely one-of-a-kind assemblage jewelry using simple-but-robust cold connections. Plus remember that I’m the mold making queen so zero coveting allowed. There’s always molding putty, air dry clay and resin to the rescue to recreate thy neighbor’s objects. Sharing is caring!

When not in the studio, we’ll be exploring the beauty of picturesque French villages where old stone buildings, faded painted facades, colorful shutters and doors, along with fields lavender and sunflowers can be seen for miles. We'll take field trips to Montolieu, an entire village dedicated to old books and unexpected finds like vintage fashion magazines and curious children's books, a side trip to the hand-made paper mill in nearby Brousses, a visit to Albi's jaw-dropping cathedral and fashion museum and a day at the famous Saturday Market in Revel where you can buy everything from adorable French smocks to locally harvested herbs & spices to artisan-made cheeses, jams, jellies, breads, patisseries, soaps, lotions, perfumes and more.

Mouthwatering meals are prepared three times a day by chef Nese Pelt, using farm-to-table ingredients bought fresh from the open air markets and specialty shops. We’ll eat family style with lots of laughter and sisterhood and a little local wine with dinner.

Our home for the week is nestled in quiet village of Durfort which has been an artisan village producing copper vessels since medieval times. La Cascade, number 27 Rue des Martineurs (Street of the Copper Beaters), was built in the mid 1600’s of local stone, mud and wattle (straw) in the same way houses in the area have been built from the medieval times up until the 20th century. The house has been beautifully restored honoring its history but adding modern facilities. There is a studio where we’ll conduct our workshop on the third floor, four bedrooms on the second floor (twin beds, double occupancy), three bathrooms, a dining room, kitchen, large outdoor terrace and a living room. The outdoor terraces lead directly down to the river and waterfall.

La Cascade is in the region of France known as Languedoc, which in an ancient French dialect means "The Land of Yes." From the moment your feet touch soil you’ll find yourself breathing deeply and saying YES to living the good life. This is your time to nourish and reconnect with your spirit and soul, relish in creative sisterhood, relax, explore quaint villages, shop for vintage treasures, make some fab art and behold beauty daily.

Workshop price: $2,300 and includes:

  • Seven nights lodging at La Cascade, double occupancy.
  • Fresh, healthy market-to-table meals - all breakfasts, most lunches and dinners.
  • Daily field trips. Revel Market Saturday morning and local flea markets Sunday morning. All excursions are optional. Students may stay behind and work in the studio if they so wish.
  • Daily art instruction and basic art supplies.
  • Open Studio time to work on your own.
  • Down time after lunch or before dinner to renew and refresh or take a little stroll to visit the beautiful little village church or sit next to the gorgeous cascading waterfall for quiet, introspective time.

Accommodations are double occupancy (two twin beds) with shared bathrooms. The art studio is located on the third floor of the house and is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Common areas also include living room, dining room and large outside terrace. WiFi is available 24/7. La Cascade is a renovated 16th century home that’s three levels, with the bedrooms on the second floor and the workshop on the third. Students must be able to climb stairs.

Airfare and transportation to and from La Cascade not included in price.

*Travel insurance is required for all students and is on the honor system. Travel insurance is not simply for disruption in travel plans, flight delays and cancellations, lost luggage or normal travel nuisances. Full insurance also covers medical emergencies and any unexpected accidents. Many US insurance plans to do not cover emergency care while traveling internationally. A little stumble on ancient cobblestone steps or bad flu bug could become an expensive ordeal.  Please carefully check your health coverage for international travel before your trip so you know before you go.

Receive a $100 discount if retreat is paid in full upon registration. Students who’ve taken workshops with me before will also receive an additional $100 discount.

Creative Connections in France

An immersive art journey with Jodi Ohl using watercolor, sketching, painting, and art journaling.

Bonjour!

Inspiration is all around us whether we are at home or on location, but how do we translate what we observe into what it is that we do?   Author, full-time artist, and instructor, Jodi Ohl, will be your facilitator in this immersive journey. During this week-long adventure in the South of France, we discover the picturesque village of Dufort, explore medieval villages, enjoy the flea market, and gather endless amounts of inspiration during our daily excursions.   Jodi will inspire you to find beauty and inspiration beyond the canvas and guide you with this mantra: ‘To Create, we need to experience.’

Each day will start with morning sketches or quick exercises in our art journals/sketchbooks as we create and connect inspiration formulated from the previous days’ adventures.   Projects will include work in watercolor, pen, pencil, collage, and a small amount of acrylic, primarily in our journals with the main project culminating from all the lessons learned on an 8 x 10 or 12 x 16 panel (flat panel appropriate for travel).   No experience required!  We have designed this workshop to meet you wherever you are in your creative journey!!

Our home base will be at La Cascade, a beautifully restored home along the banks of a river (right outside of our back door). Wake up to the soothing sounds of a cascading waterfall, enjoy your morning beverage on the patio, or take an early morning walk around the village.  Creativity is born from more than just showing up in your studio or in a classroom, it is formed by allowing yourself to experience the small moments in life.   We will celebrate the people, places, and things we encounter during our time together at La Cascade in France.  Daily discussions offering advice and exercises to hone your inspiration, artistic endeavors and creative business/life, will also be shared in addition to our studio time.  Enjoy the beginning of summer with an unforgettable, creative experience!

Spend July 15-22, 2020 with Rae Cumbie* and Carrie Emerson** of Fit for Art Patterns at La Cascade Artists Retreat in Durfort, an enchanting medieval artisan village in the Languedoc region of France to explore the countryside and a variety of fabric embellishing and surface design techniques.

The mornings will be spent in the cozy third floor artist studio of our 17th century home. We will paint, stitch, collage and piece a variety of small fabric samples to spark our creative juices and create memories of our time at La Cascade. Stitchers of all skill levels and interests are welcome.

Afternoons will be spent exploring the surrounding countryside including the flower fields, regional markets, tree lined thoroughfares, small villages and cathedral towns. Our tour guide will be Anna Cumbie, Rae’s bilingual daughter who lives and works in Toulouse as an English teacher.

She will assist us in masterfully managing our new surroundings and will lead us to some fun haunts for an authentic French Adventure. We will find inspiration in the ironwork details, copper works, blue pastel fabrics and notions, bountiful outdoor markets, museum exhibits, and fabric and trim stores in neighboring Revel.

As we move through the week’s creative experiences and beautiful adventures, your work in the studio will come to life. You will be encouraged to move your samples forward with several options depending on your interest and abilities:

  • Combine your samples into an inspired technique book,
  • Create a functional tote that will include your work,
  • Craft the samples into a wall hanging or table runner,
  • Plan and craft samples to be included in an embellished garment

Meals will be provided by La Cascade’s chef Nese using locally sourced seasonal foods and wines served on the terrace that overlooks a rushing mountain stream.

Included accommodations are double occupancy with shared baths. Single rooms are available for an additional fee of $700.  We’ll travel in shared rental cars from the Toulouse airport to La Cascade and environs.

The $2,600 cost includes most materials, room, board, field trips and priceless experiences. Not included is your airfare to and from Toulouse, travel insurance (required), an occasional restaurant meal, personal purchase or museum entrance. A $650 non-refundable deposit is due with registration, a second payment of $1,000 is due by February 15, and the final balance due by May 15.  Class size will be limited to 8, so reserve early.

Partie de Poule!

We’re having a hen party in Southern France!

A Mixedmedia Workshop with Staci Swider

Can you think of a better way to wind down summer than to spend a week making art and hanging with likeminded creative souls in a charming French village? Your residence for the week is La Cascade, a restored 17th century house situated in the tiny medieval village of Durfort. Your backyard is a lovely river with a cascading waterfall that welcomes you all day. The Village was home to a copper making industry and copper treasures can still be purchased in the shops.

Our first order of business will be to visit the local market for some sketching and inspiration and then, the sky’s the limit. Staci will guide you thru your own individual creative endeavors with a focus towards charming farm animals and market still life. We will also be using texture techniques and faux copper to create a frame for one of your paintings. You will go home with one, possibly two finished artworks plus a frame at the end of your stay.

La Cascade is the perfect venue to indulge your creative spirit and explore artistic expression in the large sky-lit studio under the eaves. Spend your mornings in the studio getting creative. Afternoons will be spent visiting the surrounding area. Once back at La Cascade, we relax in community at table, enjoying local fare prepared by our private chef, Nese Pelt. And of course, wine under the stars on the flagstone patio while we reflect upon the day and look forward to tomorrow’s adventure.  And if you need more studio time before bed? Of course! Won’t you join us?

The workshop will include:
